While getting a back massage from a professional masseuse every day would be just lovely, this isn’t practical for most of us hardworking Americans. What if I told you that you can give yourself a massage any time you want with no equipment for free. No, I’m not selling you anything – I’m simply recommending you roll around on the ground. How often does your body touch the ground on a daily basis? As humans, we’ve lost all sensory interaction with the ground other than when our cushioned sneakers touch the pavement of a city block. However, by bringing our bodies to the ground more often, we can mitigate some of the damage we’re doing on our fragile backs the rest of the day.
At Reznik Health & Movement, we are firm believers that lifestyle is the main cause for chronic pain but we also believe that lifestyle can be the antidote as well. Going to the masseuse, no matter how magical their hands seem to be, will not be the ultimate solution to your chronic stiff back. If it was, why would you have to keep going. One of the most important principles to understand when getting out of chronic pain is that it is almost always a combination of factors that is contributing to your discomfort. Through personal experience, I’ve discovered that our reliance on furniture is one of these contributing factors for many people.
So what can you do? Get off the couch! Lie on the floor and roll around like you’re a five year old kid who just ate too many Twizzlers. Not only does it feel amazing instantly but it’s actually tons of fun! Experiment with all sorts of moves – left to right, somersault, pick your legs up, pick your arms up – the possibilities are endless. Meanwhile, your joints and muscles will be getting the best massage they ever got for absolutely free! When you feel like you’ve hit a good spot and something’s “opening up,” keep at it and see if this will make you feel better. Don’t over-complicate this and simply follow your instincts on what feels good and what doesn’t.
I personally almost never lay on the couch anymore; it’s just not comfortable for me. When I come home after being behind a desk all day, I can’t wait until I can come home and roll out my back. I’ve fell in love with it so much that I now watch TV on the floor and do most of my relaxing on the floor as well.
So what are you waiting for…. get off your couch and hit the ground!
P.S. Extra brownie points for laying outside on grass, sand or even dirt! If that’s not possible, a comfy rug or spacious mat (try the MovNat Mat) really makes the experience that much better.
